For those who don’t know, Equifax is one of three major credit reporting companies that keep track and report your credit rating. When you apply for a loan, or a credit card, or even a new job, they report your credit information to the requesting agency.

Sometime early last summer, the idiots in their IT Department forgot to patch their servers with an important software update, leaving them vulnerable to attack…and they were attacked and massive amounts of data stolen.

The morons that ran that company apparently knew about it but did not make it public. To compound matters, some of the higher echelon officers sold their personal stock for millions, a criminal offense that is currently under investigation by the SEC. In August, all this became public.

Equifax then set up a Web site where members of the public could go to see if they were infected. The site gave erroneous information and could not be relied upon. Then to make matters worse, the idiots in IT entered an incorrect Web site that directed people to a fake site that got more of your personal information. Unbelievable! It just keeps getting worse and worse.

But the most important thing for all us victims is to protect ourselves as best we can from having our identity stolen. Here are a few things you can do.

First watch this very recent YouTube video, The Equifax Hack: How Can You Protect Yourself from Identity Theft?. This will give you the basic information and get you started.

The very first thing you should do today is set up a special Fraud Alert. It is free and good for 90 days. You contact one of the three credit reporting companies and fill out a form. The company will then notify the other two companies that you have an alert set up.

My suggestion is to stay away from Equifax and use Trans Union. Their form is on line and can be done in just a couple of minutes. Their site is at fraud.transunion.com. I also suggest you make a note on your calendar regarding the expiration date so you can renew it when it expires.

You can also do a credit freeze. It will cost you anywhere from $5 to $30 per company as you have to do this with each of the three credit agencies. Most experts I have listened to don’t recommend this method as it prevents all access to your credit records without your permission and could complicate your credit applications.

Instead, you might want to use an Identity Protections Service that continuously monitors your credit data and other sources looking for possible issues. The YouTube Video recommends Identity Force which also monitors Medical ID, Court Records and other locations for $10 a month. This is the one I am investigating.

There are also other companies that do the same such as LifeLock and ID Shield. Each has different plans at different prices. So I suggest you look at them all and make your decision. Too bad we can’t get Equifax to pay for this.

You might also want to start changing passwords. Consider using long, easily remembered phrases from now on. Also get a copy of your current credit report if you have not done so lately. For a free copy, go to www.annualcreditreport.com.

Hey iPad and iPhone Users: iOS11 is Here!

It’s finally here and available now. iOS 11 is a major upgrade from the previous version and there might be a few changes that confuse you at first. But, I think you will like most of them. You can wait for your phone or iPad to notify you that it is ready, but you don’t have to.

This edition covers iOS 11 in depth (mostly in the Mobile Computing section)…at least the most important issues you need to know right up front (sorry Android users…no Android stories in this edition).

iOS11 is for iPhones 5S and 5SE on up. It is also available for iPad Mini 2 on up…iPad Air and all later models…and the iPod Touch, 6th Generation. If you are not sure if it is available for you device, check out this Web Page.

I have not installed it yet…probably tomorrow. But I hope you find this new upgrade useful.

iPhone 8 AND iPhone X? Yep!

Apple held its annual iPhone Announcement event today and as expected, announced their two new iPhone 8 models. But then, they added one more thing…the iPhone X (pronounced “10”). According to Apple, it is this phone that sets the trend for the next generation of smart phones.

That may very well be…and you can read about all 3 new iPhones below in our first 2 stories. The new Model 8 phones add some very nice features and will start at $699 and $799 (with some appropriate price drops in older model iPhones). The new iPhone X will start at $1,000. For me, it is hard to justify paying more for a smartphone than a new laptop. But I am sure it will sell well.

My immediate reaction was to prefer the iPhone 8 Plus rather than the X model (assuming price was not an issue). Why? The X has some features that might not be ready for prime time. One new feature is facial recognition to activate the phone rather than a finger print reader (the above photo shows how complicated the facial recognition hardware is). It actually failed during the on-stage demo. It may be too technically advanced and might easily fail. But, that is only my opinion. The model 8’s new features, especially in the camera functions, make it highly desirable, and probably more reliable.

Frankly, if my iPhone 6 Plus failed right now, I would probably buy an iPhone 6S Plus. Not only is it cheaper than the 7 and 8 models, but I hear far too many reports that the 6S Plus camera is better than the 7 Plus. And a good camera is probably the most important feature of today’s smartphones.

Although today’s show was 2 hours long, the only other new items introduced were the new Model 3 Apple Watch and a new Apple TV device. The new Apple Watch has some much improved features including the ability to listen to music and take phone calls without having to carry an iPhone. As for the Apple TV, it now can do 4K video which has been available for some time in other brands at cheaper prices (my advice…stick to Roku).

As for release date for the new iOS 11 OS for iPhones and iPads, it was only given one sentence during the show which was a surprise. FYI, it will be on 9/19. No mention was made about the release date for the new MacOS…also a surprise. iOS 11 is a huge update for Apple mobile devices so its near exclusion from the show is a bit of a mystery.

Anyway, it was an interesting event and was glad to see all the new Apple devices. If you want to watch it yourself, I am sure it will be on You Tube in a couple of days. If not, the stories below will give you an in-depth look at all the new iPhones. Enjoy. –JRC

Windows Fall Update and Apple OS Updates Very Close

It’s all but confirmed that September 12 is the date for next big Apple event. There, iOS11 and the new MAC_OS will be released. At the same time Apple will announced the new iPhone 8 and a few other new and updated products. It is Apple’s biggest event of the year.

Microsoft will also hold an event, most likely later in September to release its latest update to Windows…AKA, the Fall Creator’s Update. All three products have been in Beta releases for some time now, so we know what will be in them. Our first two stories give the details on the upgrades for Windows and iOS 11.

While Windows only has one basic OS (with iterations for home and professional use), Apple has two…iOS 11 is for their iPhones and iPads. MAC_OS is only for iMAC desktop computers and the various Apple laptops. iOS11 will definitely have the most changes of the two Apple OS’s.

Many have speculated that Apple will eventually do away with MAC’s and focus on iOS products as it it by far the major source of Apple’s income. But that is in the distant future. With iOS 11, iPads can now replace the traditional laptop and Apple is actively promoting that concept. I know a few journalists who have done away with their laptops and are now using only the 10” iPad Pro (with a keyboard) for their only portable computing device. With iOS 11, it is finally a viable option.

As for me, I disposed of my Apple MacBook laptop a few months ago and now use an HP Spectre 360 running Windows 10. I even docked it to a 24” monitor and full keyboard to use as my main desktop computer. It is so fast and powerful it was stupid not to use it on a daily basis as my main Windows computer. In fact, I use it almost exclusively for writing this blog as my blogging software only works in Windows. But it also functions extremely well as a laptop and a tablet.

However, my main desktop is still my 27” iMac 5K Retina. The screen is so big and beautiful that it is impossible not to use. I still run Windows on it (using Parallels software), but most of my work focuses on Photoshop and Lightroom and you just can’t beat my iMac for this kind of work. On a side note, the Windows version of Office 365 is so far superior to the MAC version that I run it inside of Parallels.

But back to the topic at hand, I look forward to using my iPad running iOS 11 with a keyboard to see if I can use it in the field as a laptop. I will let you know my take on it after I use it for a while.

So as you can see, I will be getting all three OS updates for all my computers when they are released. It should be interesting and fun. I hope it turns out to be a fun experience for you also.

Most app lists are for individual use. Smartphones can be great for couples as well. It’s really just a selection of apps that can be useful for more than one person.

Past FCC Chairman Calls Current FCC Actions “Shameful”

Our first story is an interview with Tom Wheeler, the previous chairman of the FCC. This interview with Fast Company magazine focuses on the current FCC Chairman’s plans to do away with net neutrality and should be read by everyone who uses the Internet. Here is my favorite quote from the article:

“It looks like the FCC is standing up for four companies when you really get right down to it. There are four companies who really are the major beneficiaries–Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, and Charter. They provide the vast majority of high speed internet in the country. Four companies. There are a thousand companies who are the early stage innovators, the kind of folks who bring opportunity and create new jobs, who have written a letter to the FCC saying their businesses will be threatened by the elimination of Title II in order to increase the power of the Big Four. That is just an absolutely startling comparison–four companies are going to get bigger and more powerful at the expense of a thousand startups and tens of millions of consumers. That is so out of whack as to be shameful.”

I know we have hammered the ending of Net Neutrality very hard here in the last several weeks. But I thought this interview with Tom Wheeler deserved high priority in this edition. Remember, Wheeler was a former lobbyist for the telecommunications industry before becoming FCC Chairman under Barack Obama.Originally he was against Net Neutrality, but changed his tune after careful consideration and listening to the arguments of the people and many Internet-reliant companies. The current chairman, listens to no one except the big telecommunications companies, and, of course, his boss, President Trump.
